NEW! Hemp-Bamboo Hats & Beanies

Why do you make your hats out of hemp & bamboo yarn?
Hemp is the world's premier renewable resource. Hemp is extremely efficient from an environmental perspective. Hemp needs no pesticides or herbicides because it is unpalatable to insects and it grows too quickly for any weed to compete. By contrast, cotton uses more pesticides than any other commercial crop, leaving the soil depleted. This means that half of the chemical runoff polluting our rivers and lakes come from cotton growing. Also hemp is a great feeling yarn and very comfortable to wear.

Bamboo is the fastest growing plant in the world. Growing as fast as 47.6 inches in a 24-hour period reaching maturity quickly. And it does this without the need for pesticides and fertilizers. It does not require replanting after harvesting. It tolerates extremes, generates more oxygen than trees and is considered a critical element in the balance between oxygen and carbon dioxide in the atmosphere. Bamboo is naturally anti-bacterial, resists odors, and is biodegradable. People who have sensitive skin can wear bamboo fabric without any problems.

How long does it take to get a custom hat made?
Your order can take anywhere from one to two weeks to ship depending on how many orders are in front of yours. You can email us first if you like to see the lead time, most common time frame is after you order it takes one week till your hat ships and then shipping time of 2-4 days depending on where you live. Occasionally we are waiting on a shipment of yarn to reach us and this could delay your order by a couple days. We always keep good email contact with our customers.

I have a few thin strings popping out on my hat?
Hemp yarn is a long fiber material. You may have a couple of the stiffer fibers in the yarn pop out as the yarn softens. You can carefully trim these off with a sharp pair of scissors to keep your hat looking great.

What should I wash my hat with?
You can use your shampoo or laundry soap to freshen up your hat.We don't recommend washing it with other clothes because it can get smashed under all the weight, same with the dryer. Best way is to wash it in the sink and after that you can even soak it in some hair conditioner for 10 minutes to soften the yarn even more. Wash it all out and hang your hat to dry. To speed it up you can use a hair dryer. We have styrofoam heads that we put our hats on to dry. This works great for drying and storing your hat.

When I get my hat wet it seems to tighten up and get heavy?
Hemp absorbs lots of water, so when you get it wet it sort of swells up causing the stitches to tighten. As it dries and you stretch it over your head it will relax back to the original size.

Are the lightweight beanies good for summer or winter?
The light weight beanie is good for spring, summer, fall weather conditions. Also many people get the visor on them to wear in the summer for sun protection (hemp naturally repels up to 90% of UV rays). Wear them to the pool or on days you don't want to brush your hair! These are very comfortable to wear since hemp naturally helps retain your natural body temperature.

Are the midweight beanies warm enough for winter?
Not sure where you live, but we are in Colorado and the midweight beanies keep us pretty warm on typical winter days. More extreme conditions, snowboarding down the hill at 30mph or very windy blizzardy days, these hats will not be warm enough. If you have lots of hair they are even warmer and if you have little hair they will be a little cooler. Hemp naturally helps you maintain body temperature and that is why it is comfortable to wear. We just started making a style of hat for more warmth that has a fuzzy bamboo yarn crocheted with the hemp yarn to make much warmer hats.

Can you tell me more about the visor/bill option?
No difference in bill/visor, some people just use different terms. Also many people get the visor on them to wear in the summer for sun protection (hemp naturally repels up to 90% of UV rays). The bill sticks out a little over 2" from your head and we find this a good length to keep the sun off your cheeks and nose. Visor same on midweight beanies. Visor benefits is basically sun protection and people like the option of wearing it backwards, folded up, to the side, etc. If your visor gets crushed you can hand wash it and reform the visor as it dries.
